Overview
The South Pasadena Chinese-American Club awards two types of scholarship every year. The first is the Karl Hwang Memorial Scholarship and the other is "The Most Improved Student in Chinese Language" award. This year, all applications must be submitted by May 4, 2012.
The Karl Hwang Memorial Scholarship
The South Pasadena Chinese American Club annually grants two scholarships of $2000.00 each, to qualifying South Pasadena High School graduating students planning to attend an accredited four-year college or university. This scholarship was established in memory of Dr. Karl Hwang, a former SPCC President.
Dr. Hwang was one of the world foremost research scientists in the discipline of clinical pharmacology. Qualifying applicants will be considered on his or her demonstrated leadership qualities, community involvement and on an essay about his/her personal goals to be submitted with the application. Objective
In memory of Dr. Karl J. Hwang, a bio-physical chemist and the late President of the South Pasadena Chinese-American Club (SPCC), SPCC has established grant scholarship for the South Pasadena High School students planning to attend an accredited four (4) year college/university.
The Scholarship will be presented to the selected students at South Pasadena High School annual awards night.
The Scholarship will be given to the winners directly.
Selection Criteria
The application for scholarship is open to all graduating seniors planning to attend an accredited four (4) year college/university. All cultures and backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
The selection of the scholarship recipients will be based on, but not limited to, the following criteria:
- Demonstration of leadership skills and community involvement in school and/or community
- A short essay on future goal(s) and why these goal(s) were chosen, why you deserve this scholarship
- Academic excellence.
Award Committee
The scholarship recipients will be selected by the Scholarship Committee. This committee will consist of five or more members as appointed by the SPCC Board of Directors.
Application Procedures
Application may be obtained from our website: www.spcc-web.org. All applications must be submitted to Ms.Gill on or before May 4, 2012 in order to be considered. All applications must be complete with signature and date or they will be rejected. The following items must be submitted with the student's application:
- Official transcript of cumulative grades earned at SPHS. bullet Two letters of recommendation, one must be from a SPHS teacher or administrator.
- Any proof (such as awards, certificates, letters of commendation etc.) of special talents, extracurricular activities, leadership roles, etc
- An essay written by you regarding your goal and why you deserve this scholarship and any personal challenges that you have faced.
The scholarship recipients will be notified by announcement at the annual awards night.
The Most Improved Student in Chinese Language Award
Objective
To encourage the learning of the Chinese language and culture, $500 cash each will be awarded to two most improved students in the Chinese language in South Pasadena High School.
Selection Criteria
Award Committee
This committee will consist of five members as appointed by the SPCC President. The awards will be given at SPHS Senior Awards Night.
