Karl Hwang Memorial Scholarship
The South Pasadena Chinese–American Club annually grants two scholarships of $1,000 each, to qualifying South Pasadena High School graduating students planning to attend an accredited four-year college or university. This scholarship was established in memory of Dr. Karl Hwang, a former SPCC President. Dr. Hwang was one of the world’s foremost research scientists in the discipline of clinical pharmacology. Qualifying applicants will have obtained a minimum grade point average of 3.5. In addition, applicants will be considered on his or her demonstrated leadership qualities, community involvement and on an essay about his/her personal goals to be submitted with the application. In memory of Dr.
Karl J. Hwang, a bio-physical chemist and the late President of the South
Pasadena Chinese-American Club (SPCC), SPCC has established two $1000
scholarships for the South Pasadena High School students planning to attend an
accredited four (4) year college/university.
The Scholarship will be presented to the selected students at South Pasadena High School annual awards night. The Scholarship monies will be given to the registrar of the college/university of their choice upon the recipients’ acceptance to that college/university. Selection Criteria
The application for
scholarship is open to
all graduating seniors
planning to attend an accredited
four (4) year college/university.
The selection of the scholarship recipients will be based on, but not limited to, the following criteria:
Award Committee
The scholarship
recipients will be selected by the Karl Hwang Scholarship Committee. This
committee will consist of five or more members from the SPCC educational
committee, or other SPCC members as appointed by the SPCC Board of Directors.
Application Procedure
Application may be
obtained from the SPHS office or downloaded electronically.
Applications must be received by the SPHS office on or before the deadline. All applications must be complete with signature and date or they will be rejected. The following items must be submitted with the student’s application:
